There are certain genre of games that many of us may not enjoy. For some it may be Role Playing Games or RPGs. For others, sports or whatever else. Anyway, the year was 1998. A friend was sleeping over and to make it a fun night, we walked a couple of miles, all the way down to Hollywood Video and rented three games: Saga Frontier, Alundra and Metal Gear Solid. We didn’t know what to expect with either one of these but especially with MGS.
The night progressed and to be honest, while I had high hopes for Saga Frontier, I wasn’t overall impressed. An RPG and published by Squaresoft, its non-linearity did not appeal to me. Which was a shame because I was a huge RPG fan (especially, Final Fantasy) and had been since the NES days. Alundra did not feel right either. Although, my friend was really loving it.
Metal Gear Solid, though…that game blew me away. Prior to this game, I never had any interest in military / espionage type of games but this Hideo Kojima masterpiece was definitely something different. You control Solid Snake, a soldier who infiltrates a nuclear weapons facility to neutralize the terrorist threat. It may sound simple but the story is so detailed and well executed that it just pulls you in. The game is also quite challenging where you find yourself constantly retrying various scenes.
So, needless to say, MGS was my personal big winner of the sleepover and I did not hesitate to buy the game soon after.
Now, I ask you: What game did you not expect to enjoy as much as you did?
Man, your gaming experience as a kid is right alongside mine; I vividly recall these three games at the time. SaGa Frontier was pretty convoluted (but I spent too much time on it) and I thought Alundra was not bad; but it was Metal Gear Solid that was mind-blowing for the time. I still haven't got around to playing MGS V but I think Hideo Kojima wasn't heavily involved with that one.
